Been experimenting today. Taking shots (guess where) with varying amounts of
stuff and depth. I tried the Av thing, the landscape and idiot mode. By far
the bset results came from landscape mode. I assume that if I knew what I
was doing, then I could achieve that in Av mode, but I don't (yet). I'll go
and try some birdy pics tomorrow, wit'tother lens.

Might go back to El Chorro again and do some experiments - might even take
the laptop with me.

Well, isn't this fun?

At 72mb I'm not surprised. FTP would be better.

Shutter speed 1/250 sec, lens aperture set to F14.1 (low values mean the
aperture is wide open, letting more light in, high numbers mean it's
very small, letting less light in), film sensitivity, emulated in
digital cameras by adjusting the time the sensor "reads" the light
falling on it.

> Second was 1/2000 f4.6 iso 200.

The shutter is open for only 1/8th the time of the first one, so the
camera opens the aperture (the iris if you like) to compensate.

> Third was 1/4000 f4.6 iso 400.

The shutter is open for 1/16th the first picture, the aperture in the
lense cannot open any further than F4.6 so the camera has decided to
adjust the ISO speed to compensate.

I'm guessing the first was taken in full auto, and the second and third
in shutter priority mode?

In shutter priority mode you can vary the shutter speed and the camera
will automatically vary the aperture and ISO (if auto ISO is enabled,
which it obviously is) in an attempt to get a properly exposed shot.

Try full manual, where you set all three manually and the camera doesn't
try to adjust anything, to see the effect that they have.

> The third one looks nicer.

The higher the shutter speed the less of a problem camera shake will be.

(part of the reason I asked if the lens was an IS one or not)

BUT the higher the ISO number, the greater noise you will get in a
photo, but it won't really be a problem unless you get upto ISO 1600 or
higher.

Indeedy. The alternative would be to send it on a CD to someone else
(such as myself) who could try to host it.

Paul, I've got the space and banwidth to host it if you want to do it this way.
