Do you really believe that lifers can't change? And can you imagine what
a pit of vipers the lifer wing of a prison would be if everyone there
was stuck for ever with no chance of parole?

Try thinking for once.

But they're criminals so they don't count.

He's a victim so expect nothing better from him.

In all cases, lifers are only released if they are deemed to no longer
pose a threat. And once they're out they're only on licence so are
constantly supervised and know they can be thrown back inside for the
most minor of offences.

Good point. But Rope and Hog would probably think it OK, as long as
they're only able to take it out on each other.

Fat chance of that happening.

Typically, those who disagreed with you would respond to the posts
from me, Ace, Ogden, etc

It hasn't. HTH.

Unsuccessful actions may have laudable motivations, and vice versa.

I'm not sure that I do, unless you see the most basic (adult?) human
rights as something which have to be somehow earned. The view that there
are no rights without responsibilities gets my support, but your
standpoint is much more extreme.

The argument that those rights should be forfeited by becoming a career
criminal has a superficial attraction, but it's the thin end of too
large a wedge for me.

You raise valid points:
How should such individuals be dealt with?
What is prison for?

IMO, the answers to those questions is a measure of how civilized or
psycho-socially evolved a society is.
