An internal combustion engine only converts 30% of the energy in the fuel
into mechanical power at best.

But the reason motorcycle engines have traditionally used a coil that fires
one useful spark and one waste spark is to simplify the ignition sytem by
reducing the number of ignition point sets or pulser coils and reduce the
number of solid state components in the ignition control unit.

If the engineers want to burn off excess hydrocarbons in the exhaust system,
they can use a catalytic converter or inject excess air in an afterburner.

There are two ways to fire a V-twin. One way is just as you said.

But dirt trackers have been running their V-Twins as "big bang" engines for
years. They get better traction.

Some people confuse the concept by calling the re-cammed engine a "twingle"
but it isn't a twingle in the sense that both pistons come to TDC and fire at
the same time.

Tuners re-install the cams so the cylinders fire 45 degrees apart (Harley
XR750) or 90 degrees apart (Suzuki TL1000). The sound of a pack of big bang
engines going by the gransdtand is awesome.

But, with that extra spark, I thought we were just doing our part to
reduce greenhouse gasses...
