OK, and the isthmus of Panama closed only a few million
years ago, causing drastic changes in oceanic currents.

Keep in mind that right now, the Gulf Stream lets you
grow palm trees in Ireland at approximately the same
latitude as Labrador.

As I noted for someone else, there are more variables than just the
average temperature of the world impacting the polar ice.

And the California Current lets you grow them in Vancouver. Not sure what
the relevance is.
