I've just bought my first DSLR. I went for a Pentax K-x after an inordinate amount of internet research which finally resolved into an impulse buy :-) One of the advantages of the Pentax (and apparently Nikons) is that the mount is essentially unchanged so you can use any pre-digital lens in manual focus mode. It's probably the only way I'm going to be able to afford a decent macro lens in the near future. Another thing I like about the camera is the sensors low light capability. A lot of my photography is done is fairly low light conditions (shaded woods, overcast days, etc.) and being able to handhold my 50-200 zoom at 1/30th second (without flash) and still get pin sharp pictures is a revelation. But the camera does have some minor (to me) drawbacks. The AF points are not shown in the viewfinder and the Live view auto focussing is desperately slow (not unusual in DSLRs apparently). But I can live with these limitations. The camera is a huge step up from my Ricoh compact and I can't wait to see what I can do with it as the year progresses. My advice FWIW would be; Look for the best sensor in the price band you've set for yourself. Consider the cost of lenses for the type of photography you do. Get one with the biggest viewfinder you can. The Pentax one isn't huge but it's noticably bigger that the Olympus D-620 I was also considering. Try to get your hands on an actual model you are considering - test the ergonomics and physical size. That's it. I'm off now to take some pictures (oh goody, it's a nice overcast day!). -- Rick Brown Sprint RS 955i
